How to take a photo that passes

  1. Background: stand in front of a plain white or light wall — the cleaner it is, the cleaner the new background edges.
  2. Light: face a window or lamp so there are no strong shadows on your face; avoid backlight.
  3. Distance and height: hold the phone at eye level about an arm’s length away and include your shoulders. Too close distorts the face; cutting off below the chin makes the face too large.
  4. Pose: look straight at the camera with eyebrows and ears visible, no hat, neutral expression. Having someone else take it works better than a selfie.
  5. No beauty filters: many forms use face matching, and heavy filters can make it fail.

Can I use an everyday photo?

Yes, if it is front-facing, sharp and your face is large enough. In group photos the largest face is used; side views, sunglasses or covered faces won’t work as ID photos.
